{"id":9378,"date":"2022-05-12T10:32:01","date_gmt":"2022-05-12T05:02:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ies.edu\/architecture\/?p=9378"},"modified":"2023-07-15T08:03:24","modified_gmt":"2023-07-15T02:33:24","slug":"avasyam-the-place-of-living","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ies.edu\/architecture\/2022\/05\/12\/avasyam-the-place-of-living\/","title":{"rendered":"\u0100V\u0100SYAM \u2013 The place of living"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>(Semester 4)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">THE DESIGN BRIEF: BACKGROUND<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>SYAMANTAK<\/em><\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>In such ecologically sensitive &amp; culturally rich setting of Dhamapur village, <span style=\"background-color: rgba(68, 68, 68, 0.2);\"><b>Syamanta<\/b><\/span><strong>k:<\/strong> a <strong>center for experiential, lifelong learning&nbsp;and sustainable living&nbsp;<\/strong>is located<em>. \u201cOur education is related to our Mother Earth &amp; nobody should be forced to leave his village for bread, butter &amp; education\u201d \u2013 <\/em>the thought forms an integral part of their ethos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Processes of <strong>self-designed organic learning <\/strong>are run by the residents of Syamantak community. They believe in a system of education where it uses <strong>real life activities<\/strong> as a <strong>medium<\/strong> of spiritual self-evolvement,&nbsp;exploration of social entrepreneurship skills with the perspective of <strong>ecological sustainability and social justice.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>\u0100V\u0100SYAM \u2013 The place of living<\/em><\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p><em>(: Sanskrit; meaning abode, residence, home, place of living)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Syamantak currently has residential facilities, it is looking to construct <strong>a separate residential facility <\/strong>for its students, mentors &amp; visitors, in the nearby area. The residential facility is imagined to follow a <strong>similar ethos in its Architecture <\/strong>and hence be developed on lines of self-sustainability in terms of planning and materials used. However, the Architectural Designer can take the freedom to interpret these ideas in his\/her own way and hence come up with <strong>a contemporary yet traditional solution.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>PRE- DESIGN INQUIRIES<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p><em>While the broader idea of the studio revolves around <\/em><strong><em>interpreting an Architectural Form in a unique setting like Dhamapur<\/em><\/strong><em>, the studio intends to seek answers to the following research questions:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><em>What could be the architectural approach to design in a setting which in itself has a strong character and identity?<\/em><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>How can Architecture fit in or stand out in terms of sustainability?<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The following set of design inquiries are crucial for the given project:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. How does the perception of \u2018Home\u2019 change with cultural context, individual identity and economy?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Does materiality and material culture affect the idea of a \u2018Home\u2019?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. What are the effects of climatic context and natural setting on a house FORM?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4.
