7.3 Institutional Distinctiveness

7.3 Institutional Distinctiveness

The Indian Education Society’s College of Architecture was founded in 1995 by its parent body, the Indian Education Society which has been in existence since 1917.

Strongly abiding by its motto VALUE ADDITION THROUGH EDUCATION, the Society has been at the forefront of making education accessible to all through its 62 schools and 2 institutes of higher learning in the MMR region.

The most distinctive feature of the college is its LEGACY.

While the IESCOA strives to perform to the best of its abilities as a competent higher education institute, the distinctiveness of the institution stems from its LEGACY and the core values of LOYALTY and DIGNITY.

In 106 years of the existence of the Indian Education Society, a feature which deserves special mention is that some of the retired heads, teachers and other non-teaching staff volunteer their services post-retirement and the Society is grateful to them for their rich experience in improving its working.

All members of the Governing Council of the Society are IES Alumni (ex-students of IES schools) who have reached distinctive positions in their respective careers and offer honorary services for the cause of education.

In its existence of 27 years, 22 batches have graduated from IESCOA. The following facts speak for the legacy and loyalty that the staff and students have towards the college.

  • Most of the administrative and non-teaching staff have been with the college since its inception (or atleast more than 15 years)
  • The senior teachers have been associated with the college since is inception
  • The current Director and Principal have been with the college for 15 years
  • One third of the current core faculty members are alumni of the IESCOA
  • Many of the visiting faculty members are alumni of the college and established professionals in the field. They willingly give their time and expertise to the students at IESCOA

Contribution to Society

IESCOA also believes in making valuable contributions to the community that it is a part of through active  participation in ward-level and city-level activities.

The IESCOA has been engaged with the local ward office through participation in their various initiatives:

  • Lending design consultancy services for their local ward office
  • Participating in their ZERO WASTE initiatives by making installations in public areas to increase awareness amongst the citizens

At the city level, IESCOA has been involved in Urban Vision projects that look into the city’s transportation and open space issues.

Dignity of Work

The Society believes in creating a healthy, dignified, harmonious workplace for all its students and staff (teaching and non-teaching).

  • Every staff member of the college has a dedicated work desk located in well ventilated and naturally lit spaces. Adequate storage space is provided for their personal belongings.
  • There are 2 pantry set-ups on 2 separate levels that are equipped with microwave ovens, refrigerator, basic crockery and cutlery. Large break out spaces (that double up as eating areas in the break and as discussion areas during working hours) are available within the building.
  • The college terrace is available as a gathering, passive recreation and informal working space for students.
  • Clean washrooms are provided on every floor for staff as well as students.
  • The housekeeping and office staff have changing areas and restrooms on every floor for their convenience.
  • Common rooms are available within the building for female staff and students.
