Preservation of Mumbai’s Maritime History
The port of Mumbai acted as a catalyst around which the city grew.. The areas maritime history dates as far back as the 8th BC. After the Suez Canal opened in 1869, import and export trade shifted to the east coast and Mumbai Port became the principal Gateway of India.
The second oldest port of India, the Mumbai Port was the nucleus of the city around which the city grew. The area under the Mumbai Port Trust includes-
1.Sassoon Dock, Colaba, 2.Ballard Estate, 3.Indira, Victoria and Prince’s dock, 4.Elphinstone Estate, 5.Mazagaon, 6.Darukhana, 7.Sewri- Cotton green area, 8.Wadala
SPA has a site demarcated for the development of a port museum dedicated to Mumbai’s rich maritime history. The plot is strategically located close the proposed ropeway to Elephanta caves which will see heavy tourist footfall. It has the advantage of being adjacent to the large tourism garden.
